Design and Technology (DT) Curriculum at St. Catherine’s C.E. Primary School

At St. Catherine’s, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is grounded in the six essentials of good practice. These principles ensure that our DT lessons are genuinely focused on both design and technological learning, in alignment with National Curriculum requirements. The essentials are:

  • User: Understanding who will use the product and their needs.
  • Purpose: Defining the purpose and objectives of the product being designed and made.
  • Functionality: Ensuring that the product performs its intended function effectively.
  • Design Decisions: Making informed decisions throughout the design process, from initial concept to final product.
  • Innovation: Encouraging creativity and originality in the design process.
  • Authenticity: Creating products that are realistic and relevant, mirroring real-world contexts.

Curriculum Integration

These six essentials are embedded into our DT curriculum, guiding the planning and execution of design and technology projects. By integrating these principles, we aim to:

  • Foster Practical Skills: Equip pupils with the skills to design, create, and evaluate their own products.
  • Encourage Problem-Solving: Promote critical thinking and problem-solving through practical and innovative design challenges.
  • Connect to Real-World Applications: Ensure that pupils’ designs are relevant and applicable to real-world scenarios.

By adhering to these core principles, we aim to provide a comprehensive and engaging DT education that prepares pupils for future technological and design challenges.
