Physical Education (PE) Curriculum at St. Catherine’s C.E. Primary School

At St. Catherine’s, we are committed to ensuring that every child develops the skills necessary to succeed in PE, sport, and life. Our approach to Physical Education is designed to cultivate both physical literacy and emotional thinking skills through a unique, child-centred methodology.

REAL PE Approach

We follow the REAL PE scheme to deliver our PE curriculum. This approach is centred around teaching pupils about the five PE cogs:

  1. Physical: Developing fundamental movement skills and physical capabilities.
  2. Social: Encouraging teamwork, cooperation, and communication.
  3. Cognitive: Enhancing problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  4. Personal: Building self-confidence, resilience, and self-awareness.
  5. Creative: Fostering creativity and innovation in physical activities.

Each term, our focus rotates among these five cogs, allowing students to develop a well-rounded set of skills and attributes. By integrating these elements into our PE lessons, we aim to support children in becoming not only skilled athletes but also confident, thoughtful individuals.
