Prevent (Extremism & Radicalisation)
Prevent is a national government programme, which aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
The objectives of Prevent are to:
- tackle the ideological causes of terrorism
- intervene early to support people susceptible to radicalisation
- enable people who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate
The Prevent duty requires specified authorities such as education, health, local authorities, police and criminal justice agencies (prisons and probation) to help prevent the risk of people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
It sits alongside long-established safeguarding duties on professionals to protect people from a range of other harms, such as substance abuse, involvement in gangs, and physical and sexual exploitation. The duty helps to ensure that people who are susceptible to radicalisation are supported as they would be under safeguarding processes.
As a school we meet our responsibilities under the Prevent duty through:
- Creating positive, trusting and open relationships with our children and families so that concerns can be shared
- Fostering positive relationships with Police and Local Authority Safeguarding Partners to share information
- Remaining up to date on local crime statistics and having a knowledge of our local area and risk factors
- Educating our children in British Values and Healthy Relationships
- Teaching children about Online Safety
- Training staff in the Prevent Duty
- Challenging any unhealthy ideologies through educative and open conversation in line with our behaviour policy
- Remaining vigilant for signs and signals that our children may be being drawn into radicalised ideologies
- Maintaining our Safeguarding Policy and following this in the light of any concerns
- Making Prevent referral where this is appropriate
